New
Charter Housing Trust Group exists to build and support communities
in the provision of safe, comfortable, secure and affordable homes
through partnership with customers and others.
The Group comprises three Local Housing Companies: New Charter
Housing Trust Limited, New Charter Housing (North) Limited and
New Charter Housing (South) Limited; a charitable Industrial
and Provident Society, Aksa Housing Association; and two other
companies, New Charter Building Company Limited, and New Charter
Property Services Limited.
New
Charter formed in 1999 as the new landlords to own and manage
nearly 15,000 properties transferred from the Council. Until
September 2000, it was Britain's biggest Large Scale Voluntary
Transfer (LSVT). In November 2005, the Group expanded by
incorporating Aksa Housing Association, based in Oldham.
Aksa is a BME association with homes in Bury and Manchester
as well as Oldham and Tameside. With a turnover of £45
million a year and a workforce of more than 800, New Charter
is one of the twenty largest Registered Social Landlords
(RSL), and is regulated by The Housing Corporation, a Government
watchdog.
In
October 1999, tenants voted two to one in favour of transfer, which
took place on March 27th 2000.
New
Charter inherited homes needing over £220 million of
repairs and maintenance, and a 10-year improvement programme
started immediately. New bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and
central heating are being installed in many homes for rent.
Already hundreds of tenants have benefited from this investment.
Funding is from the Nationwide, the largest Building Society
in the world.
