New Charter Housing Trust Group accepts its responsibility as an employer to ensure, as is reasonably practicable the health, safety and welfare of its employees and others who may be affected by its activities. New Charter Building Company have achieved ROSPA Silver and CHAS accreditations.

Statement of Health & Safety Policy

 

 

New Charter Housing Trust Group is committed to ensuring the health, safety and welfare of its employees, so far as is reasonable practicable.

Works carried out by the Group will so far as is reasonably practicable comply with the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and other legislation. All necessary steps will be taken to ensure that statutory duties are fulfilled at all times.

To achieve and maintain good health and safety standards, all employees have an important part to play. New Charter believes that employee participation and co-operation are essential for promoting health and safety. Joint consultation at all levels helps everyone realise their responsibility for safety.

Every employee must co-operate with the policy objectives to enable New Charter to comply with its statutory duties.

The Group Health & Safety Manager oversees operation of this policy on my behalf and is available to advise all staff on health and safety matters.

As Group Chief Executive, I am responsible for upholding this policy via the Group Strategic Committee. The Group's Health & Safety Policy and supporting arrangements detail my duties and that of other Directors, Managers and other employees. All staff must know their duties as detailed in the safety arrangements.

This extract of the policy statement will be displayed in a prominent position for the benefit of all staff. Copies of the full Health & Safety Policy, which details the organisation and arrangements for carrying out the Policy is available on the intranet for use and reference by staff.


Directors and Heads of Service:

 

 

Promoting health and safety as an integral part of normal management practices.

Ensuring that adequate resources are made available for health and safety.

Establishing the necessary structure to facilitate effective health and safety management.

Ensuring that effective communication systems exist for health and safety.

Ensuring the effective implementation of Group Health & Safety Policies and supporting information.

Setting performance standards based on corporate guidelines and ensuring that systems are in place for measuring health and safety performance.

Ensuring that provision is made for adequate supervision and training to ensure good health and safety standards.


Ensuring that specific responsibilities and duties for health and safety are allocated to all staff throughout their area of work.

Ensuring that local policies, procedures, safe systems of work are developed and implemented in line with the Group Policy on health and safety.

 

Managers and Supervisors:

 

 

Developing and implementing procedures and safe systems of work to improve safety performance within their area of responsibility.

Ensuring that employees, contractors and visitors are aware of safety procedures and their responsibilities.

Establishing that all equipment, plant and substances used are suitable for the task and are kept in good working condition, this includes the regular maintenance and servicing of equipment.

Providing adequate training, information, instruction and supervision to ensure that work is carried out without risk to health and safety.

Taking immediate steps to investigate any risk to health and safety arising from work activities.

Ensuring that adequate risk assessments are carried out, records are kept and that employees are made aware of the results of such assessments.

Bringing to the prompt attention of senior management any health and safety issues which require their attention.

Ensuring that all accidents, dangerous occurrences and 'near misses' are properly recorded and reported and that an investigation is carried out immediately, to determine the cause and ensure prevention of a similar events in the future.

Maintain safe access and egress from the workplace at all times, so far as is reasonably practicable.

 

Employees:

 

 

Take reasonable care for their own health and safety.

Consider the safety of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.

Work in accordance with information and training provided.

Refrain from intentionally misusing or recklessly interfering with anything that has been provided for health and safety.

Report any hazardous defects in plant and equipment or shortcoming in the existing safety arrangements to a responsible person without delay.

Not undertake any task for which authorisation and or training has not been given.

Co-operate with and assist management in complying with current health and safety legislation and the Group Health & Safety Policy.

Report accidents, dangerous occurrences and near misses.

 

Safety Representatives:

 

 

Attending Health & Safety Committee meetings to consider health and safety innovations.

Undertaking workplace inspection and recommendations on action required.

Commenting on produced risk assessments and assisting with their completion.

Being consulted on accidents in the workplace and correspondence from the enforcing authorities.

 

 

This policy will be periodically reviewed to take account of organisational changes, also having regard to changes in legislation.
